What is special about ski touring in Norway

There is something very special about ski touring in Northern Norway, particularly this region around Tromso.

Firstly the scenery is incredible, snowy mountains popping up out of the sea in every direction. Islands linked by bridges each with their own character. Beautiful gnarly birch forest with the low sun poking through as you descend in the late afternoon. Catching a glimpse of the Northern lights as you pop outside before bed. It is the feeling of skiing beautiful cold fresh snow and ending up at the sea. It is drinking a warm tea and waffles in a cozy little cafe you stumble across at the end of the day. It's standing on the shore as you take off your ski's.

It is hard to put your finger on one thing, but for me it is a combination of all of these factors. This region of Norway lends itself perfectly to a first ski touring trip to Norway. There are so many beautiful itineraries to do on the surrounding Islands and Tromso Mainland and the terrain is perfect for ski touring, with open descents, lots of aspects and no pressure to get on anything to steep.

About this course

  • Each day your guide will chose the best location to embark on a ski touring journey with fjord views and hunting out the best snow conditions.

  • There will be no lift access, so each day we will develop our uphill touring technique and experience. Finding a good pace for the whole group and enjoying the peace and tranquility of this beautiful mode of travel.

  • Your guide will give tips throughout the week on how to improve your off piste ski ability to get the most out of the descents and we in endeavor to find the best snow and fresh tracks when possible.

  • We will practice with our avalanche safety gear during the week, with various training scenarios as part of a journey, to keep your skills topped up.

  • Throughout the week we will discuss and dig into the snow to improve your knowledge, look at route choice, navigation and planning to offer you the confidence to head out on more day tours in the future.

Ski Level and Fitness

Fitness
You need to have current fitness, ability and experience out in the mountains hiking for 6- 7 hours at a time. You need to be comfortable going uphill for a few hours at a time with a day bag and keeping a pace of 200-300m altitude gain per hour. There will be days when we could do up to 1000m of ascent with a rucksack.
Ski Level
You need to have recent experience of skiing in a ski resort with the ability to link medium radius turns on black pisted runs whilst controlling your speed and with the ability to stop or avoid obstacles whenever needed. You must have some experience skiing off-piste sections in a ski resort or as part of a back country descent. Skiers need to be confident that they can safely negotiate the off-piste equivalent of red runs in variable snow conditions. It does not need to look pretty but it needs to be safe and effective. You need a minimum of a few days ski touring experience before joining this course but we will develop those skills throughout the week.

Equipment

You will need a full ski touring set up which you can either bring with you or rent in Tromso. If you need to rent the equipment please e-mail Lou with a list of the equipment you need and she will help you arrange the booking. This will need to be reserved in advance, please contact Lou for more information and any questions.

This will be:

  • Ski crampons.

Booking and logistics

Price

£700 per person for five days of coaching and guiding.

This course has a maximum of six spaces and will need four people to run. Price adjustments can be discussed if we have to run at a lower ratio.

Additional costs not included in this price:

  • Accommodation in or near Tromso ( Group accommodation is suggested but if you prefer to stay separately this can be discussed. )

  • Hire car rental in Tromso ( It is essential that you rent a car for the week as a group or individually.)

  • Equipment rental

  • Ski and Travel Insurance e.g BMC Travel Insurance

  • All food whilst in Tromso

Once we have a group, I will connect you all so that you can arrange accommodation and travel together. In Norway it is illegal for the Ski Guide to offer transport for their group without a taxi licence, so I would encourage you to hire a car and find accommodation together to make this a cost effective week. I can meet at your accommodation on the first evening to check equipment and have a welcome briefing.

Logistics

Travel

The closest and most effective travel sollution is to fly to Tromso. This is a small airport so most often you will need a two stop flight but there have been some reasonably priced direct flights from some of the more major airports in the UK and abroad. You can rent a car at the airport or take a taxi to your accommodation from there.

Accommodation

You will need to find accommodation on Tromso Island or within a 20km radius of Tromso island.

Previous ski touring groups have pulled together to arrange a lodge or big apartment to share. This worked out very well for group bonding, it was cost effective and gave a base for some before and after course learning. I will create a group contact once we have everyone booked on the course so you can team up to find accommodation.

If you prefer to find your own accommodation or would rather stay in a hotel, there are plenty of hotels in Tromso town to choose from.

Hire car

In Norway it is illegal for a Ski Guide to transport their clients without a Taxi licence, therefore during this course you will need to rent a car. We suggest you do this as a group. The group will be a maximum of 5 people. You will need space or a roof rack to transport the ski's in addition. Winter tyres are essential and 4x4 capabilities are desirable.

Equipment rental

Should you need to rent equipment, you can book this online, in advance with the help of Lou through, Tromso Outdoor Tromsø Outdoor | Guided activites, Equipment Rental, Bicycle and Ski Service

The opening hours are between 10am and 5pm, so if you are renting equipment please aim to arrive in time to collect you equipment the day before our course starts. The starting price for this is around 5000NOK ( £400) for the week
